Malgorzaty Tryuk z Varšavské university (Uniwersytet Warszawski), mezinárodně uznávané badatelky v oblasti teorie tlumočení, zkušené pedagožky, dlouholeté vedoucí Oddělení tlumočení a audiovizuálního překladu na této univerzitě a koordinátorky kurzů EMCI tamtéž. V rámci svého pobytu na Ústavu translatologie přednese dvě mimořádné přednášky věnované tlumočníkům působícím v koncentračních táborech za 2. světové války a tlumočníkům v interbrigádách během občanské války ve Španělsku v letech 1936-39. Obě přednášky budou proneseny v angličtině a proběhnou 12. 12. 2022 od 14:10 do 15:40 v učebně H206 (Ústav translatologie, Hybernská 3).
1. The Cinematic Figure of an Interpreter in a Nazi Concentration Camp:

Despite a massive amount of the archival material on Nazi concentration camps, the references to camp translators and interpreters are random, brief and laconic. Usually they consist of dry facts as related in ontological narratives of victims of the Nazi regime. In this presentation these records will be confronted with the picture of Marta Weiss, a fictional figure of a camp interpreter presented in the 1948 docudrama Ostatni etap (The Last Stage) by the Polish film director Wanda Jakubowska, herself a prisoner of the concentration camp in Birkenau.
The topic of interpreting and translating in a concentration camp will be presented from three different angles: film studies, feminist studies and interpreting studies
2. Interpreting in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1938)
The aim of this presentation will be to describe multilingual interactions at the XIII Jarosław Dąbrowski International Brigade between volunteers of different nationalities, mainly Poles and the Spanish population as narrated by Boruch Nysembaum (“Bobruś”), a communist from Warsaw and a direct participant of the Spanish Civil War. At the same time, it is the first presentation of on-the-spot memoirs written by a volunteer who did not return from the war. On the basis of his narrative, the chapter tries to answer to the questions concerning the way volunteers, without inadequate foreign language skills, communicated with the Spanish population and with other volunteers, the forms of communications, and finally, the specific characteristics of this multilingual communication.
